Draft South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2019-2024 survey

The Queensland Government’s Draft South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2019-2024 has a vision of a sustainable koala population in the wild in South East Queensland that is supported by a coordinated and strategic approach to habitat protection, habitat enhancement and threat reduction.

The draft Strategy lists six priority areas for action over the next 5 years.

Strategic coordination: Implement a strategic and coordinated approach to koala conservation that includes all levels of government, plus the community, non-government organisations and industry.
Habitat protection: Protect koala habitat from the impacts of clearing
Habitat restoration for koalas: Work with all landholders within the Koala Priority Areas to restore the koala habitat in areas that may have been cleared.
Threat management: Reduce threats to koalas such as dog attacks, car strikes, disease and habitat loss.
Community engagement: Partner with the broader community so that everyone plays a role in protecting koala habitat and reducing the threats to koalas.
Improved mapping, monitoring, research and reporting: Produce high quality koala habitat mapping, and undertake research programs to make better decisions that improve koala conservation.
